The quarter ends on Friday (tomorrow). I will not accept any late work after TODAY, Thursday, Oct. 25. Hand in any late work to me IN PERSON. TODAY. I will be in the library from 4:00 to 6:00 PM today. Find me. If that’s not possible, turn things in to my box by 9:00 AM Friday OCT. 26

     1.   Get reading/dialogue journal instructions for Independent Book Project. Review and discuss.

     2.   Map out your reading goals with this bookmark / SSR 

     3.    Finish reading 3 “Winning College Essays” and then, individually, evaluate one of the essays in the packet of “Winning” essays and explain (on the back of the graphic organizer) what qualities you think contributed to the essay opening the door to the school to which it was directed. Use specific examples from the essay to support your ideas 

     4.   Share your evaluations in small groups. 

    HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY, October 30: write a 500-650 word essay that is polished and thoroughly developed. (See handout for details.)

·       Read at least two essays during this time. 

   2.  As a whole class, review Unconventional Prompts. Choose 3 or 4 of these prompts and take notes/brainstorm in your notebook about what you could write about these 25 (45)

       For next class (Tuesday, October 23), choose one of these unconventional prompts and write a complete draft of an essay (500-600 words, typed, double-spaced.)

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.


     1.   Finish Independent Book Selection process (we ended with the Michelle Obama book.) Take notes on book choices. 

Get a copy of your book by Thursday October 25

     2.   Free-write: “What is Feminism, October 17, 2018”
·       What is feminism? (how do you define it?)
·       What does it mean to be a “feminist?” What behaviors, ideas, actions, etc. would indicate that someone (you, even!) is a feminist?
·       What behaviors, ideas, actions, etc. are NOT feminist?
·       Where and how does “feminism” take place?
·       Is “feminist” an identity? Explain.

     2.   In groups of 3 or 4, exchange your drafts of your personal essay (about childhood experiences.) Read each other’s essays and make comments on things you liked about the essays. Highlight or underline these places and write in the margin why you like these places. Try to read at least two essays during this time. 

     3.   As a whole class, review the Common Application Essay Prompts. Discuss possible approaches to these prompts and mark which prompts are most interesting to you and brainstorm ideas, if there is time. Choose one of these prompts and write a complete draft of an essay for Friday, October 19. (500-650 words, typed, double-spaced.) 

     4.   Continue Independent Book Selection process (we ended with the Michelle Obama book.) Take notes on book choices.

     2.   Due Monday, October 15: In Google Classroom: Write a 2 page response to the film Confirmation. This response should include your own reactions and responses to Anita Hill’s story and how it parallels and/or differs from the Kavanaugh hearings. Consider writing about how race and racism, and sex and sexism and misogyny factored in to these two cases. This should be typed, double-spaced, organized and polished and submitted in Google Classroom.

3. Hand in your drafts of your personal essay.

     1.   Read the article about Anita Hill. Underline/highlight and take notes on it, especially on things that seem similar to the Kavanaugh hearings. NOTE: the instructions at the top of the article say to “respond to the questions at the end of the article.” HOWEVER, there are no such questions, so ignore this particular instruction.  10-15 minutes

 2.   Hand in this work

    3.   Begin viewing the film Confirmation. You will be writing a response to the film after we finish viewing it next week, so take notes on it in your notebooks—notes about what is going on, who is involved, their reactions, parallels with Kavanaugh hearings, etc.

     1.   Listen to and discuss NPR story “Why Women Have the Right to be Good and Mad”

     2.   Small groups discuss “Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa”:
a.   Discuss your response to the essay and share your charts.
b.   Locate sentences or paragraphs where Sedaris is obviously envious of Hugh’s childhood and where Sedaris is aware that Hugh’s life was often lonely and insecure.
c.    Discuss the purpose of Sedaris’s essay. What do you think his purpose is?  

     3.   Discuss essay as a whole class: how does David Sedaris reveal his personality? What is Sedaris’s purpose in this essay? 

     4.   Individually, look at your list of childhood experiences. Add to the list. Do a whip-around sharing of items on your list. 

     5.   Brainstorm specific stories or situations that center on one of these experiences. 

     6.   For Tuesday, October 9: Bring in a complete draft of a personal essay that explores your childhood experiences (2-3 page, double spaced, typed)

     7.   Begin drafting your essay
