Overview of the next week:
·       Today: begin exploring the issue of freedom of speech in relation to safe space (including reading “The Coddling of the American Mind” in class today)
·       HOMEWORK for Wednesday, Sept. 5: Finish reading “The Coddling of the American Mind” and read and annotate Nathan Heller’s “The Big Uneasy.”
·       Wednesday 9/5: discuss the Heller article and record provocative quotes from the essay. Discuss these quotes and ideas in groups and write briefly about one of these ideas. Whole class discussion and take notes. Conduct research in groups.
·       Friday 9/7: Discuss your research and review “The Coddling” and “The Big Uneasy”
·       Tuesday 9/11: Write in-class essay on the topic (this is a Pre-assessment)


     1.   Share at least one sentence from your letter. Hand in your letter of introduction 
     2.   Community Builder: Common Commonalities 
     3.   Free-write: what do you know about the following terms?
Micro aggressions
trigger warnings
safe space
politically correct  

    4.   Discuss in pairs / share out with class 

    5.   Watch film clip  and take notes on the sheet provided 

    6.   Discuss in small groups and whole class: In what ways does the clip raise issues or concerns connected to the intersection of free speech with safe space? How does it raise those concerns? 

    7.   Read “The Coddling of the American Mind”; (I read aloud the 1st three sections and we discussed the ideas in these sections and then students continued to read the rest of the article on their own)  Continue reading and taking notes on places where you see connections to the South Park clip. Note places where you agree/disagree with ideas expressed or explored in the piece. Make note as well of places where you have questions, where you have had experiences that reflect or challenge the observations of the writers. 

    8.   HOMEWORK for Wednesday September 5: Finish reading “The Coddling…” bring your notes and ideas in to class on Wednesday
